The thriving township of Tiaro is best known for its diverse range of agricultural products including tropical fruits, macadamia nuts, olives, vegetables and a vineyard. However, its becoming increasingly popular for a number of other activities. Antique shops and craft galleries are located around the Tiaro region. The local butcher's shop is renowned for the quality and flavour of its smallgoods. The Mary River's beauty can be enjoyed in many spots.
Maryborough
27kms north of Tiaro, following the Bruce Highway. Situated on the Mary River, Maryborough was first settled in 1847 and captures history in its beautifully restored buildings and houses, an outstanding collection of museums, ghost tours and iconic historical characters. Year-round festive activities celebrate Maryborough's historical and industrial milestones, including the Holden Maryborough Technology Challenge each September, which sees thousands of young people flock to the city for an action-packed, visual event.
Hervey Bay
Whale Watching Capital of Australia and Gateway to Fraser Island.
Bordered by 40km of pristine beaches, Hervey Bay is one of Queensland's best natural holiday destinations, offering convenient access to two World Heritage-listed areas, Fraser Island and the Southern Great Barrier Reef. The Bay has gained international recognition as one of the best locations to view the majestic humpback whales as they make their yearly migration south, through the region's calm waters, from late July to early November. The fishing options are endless... the estuary, beach, jetty, reef and game fishing is regarded world-class. Just under an hour's drive from Tiaro, Hervey Bay is less than 60km away.
Fraser Island
World Heritage-listed Fraser Island is a unique natural environment that has developed over 800,000 years- it is the largest sand island in the world and one of the rare places where rainforest grows on sand. Fraser Island's abundant pristine freshwater lakes and crystal clear creeks are great spots to view flora and fauna. Scenic 4WD circuits and walking tracks, including sections of the Fraser Island Great Walk, take in some of the largest of the lakes. The Hideaway Station Hotel hosts a trip or two to Fraser Island each year, usually at least one "men's" trip.
